“His own heart laughed, and that was quite enough for him.”
~ Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
The 2017 movie The Man Who Invented Christmas is an imagining of how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) came to write A Christmas Carol and create the famous character of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer). At the time of the movie’s release, director Bharat Nalluri described having been “fascinated with A Christmas Carol since first reading it as a child” and immersing himself in “all things Dickensian” to prepare for the film—including Les Standiford’s nonfiction book by the same title, which sets Dickens’ work in its historical context.
As we wrote when we last recommended this movie:
The Man Who Invented Christmas…offers a many-layered narration not only of the presumed genesis of one of Charles Dickens’ greatest publications, but also an entertaining and kind-hearted look into the deeper layers of the human heart. The film also explores the baggage of unforgiveness that we carry, the creativity that ensues from overcoming complacency, entitlement, and our most deep-rooted fears, and the role that our families play throughout life. The story quite intelligently weaves history, fantasy, reality, and a little bit of magic into what will finally become one of the most famous products of English Christmas literature—A Christmas Carol.
