Ron Unz, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Unz Review, is our pick for Hero of the Week for his brilliant and tireless opposition to Israel’s expanding genocide and crimes. In his numerous post-October 2023 articles covering this topic, Unz has been unafraid to depart from the “controlling narrative” propagated by obsequious mainstream media outlets and to dissect both the politics and tactics of genocide.
Over the past year, Israel’s military conduct in Gaza, according to a report titled “A Cartography of Genocide” by the interdisciplinary research agency Forensic Architecture, has involved “a systematic and organised campaign to destroy life, conditions necessary for life, and life-sustaining infrastructure.”
In his recent article, “The Total Madness of the State of Israel,” Unz fleshes out this military description, providing chilling details about the callous, lawless, and at times vitriolic mindset of the leaders propagating the genocide. In that piece, Unz also notes the irony of Israel’s recent and shameless verbal and military attacks on the United Nations—the organization that formally launched the State of Israel in 1948.
Unz, of Ukrainian descent, has not always been a publisher. He began his career as a successful businessman in the financial software arena, selling his analytics firm to Moody’s in 2006. From his California base, he has also involved himself in politics, including runs for governor (1994) and the U.S. Senate (1999 and 2016) as well as sponsorship or support for various ballot initiatives. For a time, Unz was the publisher and financial savior of The American Conservative (until the outlet “summarily purged” him, having decided to head in a more “establishmentarian” direction). He has published The Unz Review since 2013.
