This week, Dutch farmer Jeroen van Maanen joins me to continue discussing the theme for the Solari Report’s 2nd Quarter 2023 Wrap Up: Dutch Farmers and Fishermen: Local Heroes in the Global War on Our Food and Property Rights. Van Maanen comes from a long line of farmers and has been active in standing up for his fellow farmers since 2019.
I interviewed van Maanen earlier this year to understand and learn from the challenges that Dutch farmers are facing as the Dutch government seeks to move farmers off their land. My written report on the 2nd Quarter 2023 Wrap Up website provides many fascinating details from that discussion and from my interviews with other Dutch farmers and fishermen.
As van Maanen points out, “Society keeps demanding changes of farmers, for which we need to make private investments, but the cost of these investments is not included in the cost of our products, because the consumer expects cheap food.” One of most important actions each of us can take, therefore, is to alter that consumer expectation and recognize the centralizing forces and economic warfare the people who feed us are contending with. Let’s all do everything we can to make our local food networks resilient—while supporting farmers’ ability to keep doing what they love so we can have healthy and nutritious food.
