The HOPE Sussex Community (Home of Positive Energy / HOPE) has gained recognition across the UK as an impressive community success story that has emerged out of the turmoil and unpredictability of recent years. Nestled in the Sussex countryside, HOPE operates entirely through the efforts of volunteers and is community-funded.
What began as a modest initiative with a few families has evolved into a dynamic center offering fresh produce, a café, educational seminars, festivals, musical performances, art displays, foraging experiences, and holistic therapies. HOPE’s educational offerings for children (from the early years through age 16) prioritize a nurturing and supportive learning environment—enriched by lush greenery and abundant mural art—that endeavors to counteract the growing influence of state control.
The center hosts independent tutors who use HOPE’s resources to teach children a wide array of subjects, including English, literature, mathematics, science, art, drama, holistic studies, foraging, and music. Katy-Jo Murfin, one of the directors and a former West End actress, also contributes to the independent news organization UK Column. Murfin’s drama and vocal classes for children have significantly boosted the confidence of the young participants, leading to the emergence of confident, talented actors and singers, brimming with stage presence that is evident in their impressive theatrical productions. Sadie, a mother of four and an ex-primary teacher (of over a decade) and anti-lockdown activist, is the other powerhouse director who volunteers to help run the project, along with her husband Matt.
Inspired by Maria Montessori’s statement, “Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world,” HOPE provides children with the freedom to explore, express themselves, and engage in play. Characterized by its welcoming atmosphere, where smiles and open arms abound, the community is fostering an environment of love, learning, and personal growth while building enduring connections and offering support to its members.
HOPE just held its third hugely successful Freedom Music Festival, and we are delighted to hear that they will be running another festival next year (dates to be confirmed). We invite you to read an article (unpublished and written for CHD Europe) describing the 2022 music festival. Be inspired by this vibrant example of community-building!
