Pushback of the Week: April 15, 2024: Tennessee Pushes Back on Pharma Food

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ~ Hippocrates

This week we recognize the state of Tennessee for its pushback against what we refer to as “pharma food.” We doubt that the influential Greek physician Hippocrates had this kind of “medicine” in mind when he penned his famous quote.

Significant scientific and ethical concerns are being raised about the federal government’s decision to fund research on so-called “edible vaccines”—vaccines grown in genetically engineered plants intended for human or animal consumption. In response, Tennessee Representative Scott Cepicky (along with House co-sponsors Bud Hulsey, Elaine Davis, Rusty Grills, Timothy Hill, Susan Lynn, Greg Martin, Debra Moody, Bryan Richey, and Tim Rudd) recently passed HB 1894 (nicknamed the “vaccine lettuce” bill), which “defines food that contains a vaccine or vaccine material as a drug for purposes of the Tennessee Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.”

With sponsorship from Senator Joey Hensley, the bill also passed in the Senate. Hensley told local news that because “the U.S. Congress had recently taken up a bill that has allowed for the dispersal of vaccines through the food supply…this bill was necessary to protect Tennesseans.”

Tennessee lawmakers have long been active with other significant initiatives surrounding state and local food production and distribution, including legislation addressing the distribution of raw milk and butter, and a bill requiring that any meat labeled as a product of Tennessee be from an animal born and raised in the state.

We encourage you to support and keep a close eye on pushback against pharma food in your state.
