Plunder Capitalism: Land Grab Tactics

A nation of home owners, of people who own a real share in their own land,
is unconquerable.”
~ President Franklin Roosevelt, November 1942

By Catherine Austin Fitts

Private property and the responsible management of our land are the basis of family wealth and human freedom. Unfortunately, there is little doubt that around the world, a land grab is presently accelerating, with a large playbook of tactics (many of them involving private equity players) being used to squeeze landowners and homeowners off of their land or out of their homes. In fact, land and the mineral and other natural resources that come with land and attached improvements are a primary target of plunder capitalism.

As part of our theme for the1st Quarter 2024 Wrap Up—focused on Using the U.S. States’ Constitutional Powers to Preserve Sovereignty and Financial Freedom: How We Can Stop the Coup—we invite you to read our article on “Plunder Capitalism: Land Grab Tactics,” now published at the 1st Quarter 2024 Wrap Up web presentation. Co-authored with Solari general counsel Carolyn A. Betts, the land grab discussion complements our recent review of “Case Studies in Plunder Capitalism.”

Our discussion outlines several broad categories of tactics commonly used in land grabs:

  1. Tactics that harm or disadvantage existing owners, increasing the chances of a sale (or even forcing a sale or property transfer)
  2. Tactics that give potential acquirers disproportionate financial and political power in the marketplace
  3. Tactics that apply to entire neighborhoods, regions, or industries (what we call “bulk land acquisition”)

Unfortunately, many owners do not see the plunder coming, or if they do, they may find the tactics difficult to combat. A key question we must all consider is what we can do to protect owners of farmland, ranches, and homes. To this end, we invite our subscribers to post comments and suggestions below—this is an opportunity for us to share intelligence across our network and develop plans for effective action at the state, local, and personal levels.
