Our Music of the Week comes as a suggestion from a subscriber, and what a beautiful recommendation it is. We are hearing the young musicians of Academy Baroque Soloists perform a part of Henry Purcell’s Come Ye Sons of Art—a series of odes written in 1694 in honor of the birthday of Queen Mary and widely considered one of his most elaborate and important works.
Purcell ranks among the foremost of English early music composers and was for many years the organist at both Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal.
The musicians we are hearing are part of the Royal Academy of Music, performing live in Duke’s Hall in January 2024. We have chosen to stream the music from the YouTube channel of Gabriel Alves, who is the first flutist (recorder) in the ensemble. Young Johan Ulfsparre from Sweden is the countertenor.
Bravo!
