Movies of the Week: October 7, 2024: Harry & Snowman and Red Dog

“I really don’t think I could consent to go to heaven if I thought there were no animals there.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

This week, we have selected two Movies of the Week: the documentary Harry & Snowman (one of our previous movie picks) and the Australian movie Red Dog, based on a true story. Both of these films emphasize the transformative connections and relationships between humans and animals, underscoring the significant role that animals play in our lives.

As many animal enthusiasts will attest, animals have a remarkable ability to enhance our lives in countless ways. From a gentle purr to the meeting of eyes, the simple joy of their presence brings comfort and companionship, while they often ask for little more than love and a bit of food in return. As “cat doctor” Louis J. Camuti once observed, “Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other.”

Even from afar, it’s hard not to feel uplifted by the sight of a bird of prey riding the thermal currents, a rabbit nibbling on grass, or a dog joyfully welcoming its owner home. Through their silent communication, animals can provide unconditional love and bring a sense of peace when it is most needed. For that reason, we encourage you to watch the two films and to spend more time with these incredible beings; both you and the animals will benefit immensely.
