“Prayer does not change God, prayer changes me.” ~ C.S. Lewis
The 2002 book by C.S. Lewis scholar David Downing, The Most Reluctant Convert: C.S. Lewis’s Journey to Faith, which became a stage play in 2016 and a biographical film in 2021, is our pick for Movie of the Week. Set against picturesque English backdrops that include Oxford, this captivating film chronicles some of the events that shaped the life of one of the most celebrated Christian authors of the last hundred years (and the fascinating author of The Chronicles of Narnia).
In the film, C.S. Lewis in his later years reflects on the extraordinary transformation that led him from rigid atheism to a prolific Christian faith. The narrative encompasses Lewis’s challenging upbringing, his experiences during World War I, and the influential friendships he formed at the illustrious Oxford University, focusing on the pivotal moments that guided his evolution as a thinker and writer. As Lewis eventually wrote in his spiritual memoir, Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life, “The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation.”
We encourage you to watch this beautifully constructed film and explore—or revisit—Lewis’s work.
The film can be watched on various platforms.
