Movie of the Week: September 2, 2024: The Capture

“Seeing is deceiving.” ~ The Capture

Receiving rave reviews, the TV series The Capture does an excellent job of demonstrating the chilling threats posed by deep fakes and the influence of the corporate media—particularly the news outlets that serve as channels for intelligence agency information manufacturing.

This chilling, gripping drama tells the story of a British soldier who reunites with his young daughter as a free man after a murder conviction in Afghanistan is overturned due to unreliable video evidence. However, his life takes another dramatic turn when incriminating CCTV footage from a night in London emerges, leading to new criminal accusations against him. As the soldier finds himself once again battling for his freedom, a determined young detective assigned to the case uncovers a complex conspiracy.

The first season of The Capture gradually reveals the potential misuse of video technology, while the second season emphasizes the many ways in which it can be applied, from inventing legal evidence to manufacturing public opinion with highly realistic fake news. As Catherine notes, “If you don’t understand that you should never trust the media, this will persuade you.”
