“This campaign is about our constitutional freedoms. [Voters] are deeply concerned that we are losing our constitutional rights of free speech, privacy, and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, to a federal government which has, under both political parties, become an anti-democratic surveillance state….” ~ Dennis Kucinich
Veteran Ohio politician Dennis Kucinich is running for Congress in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District. Kucinich previously represented Ohio as a Democrat (District 10 from 1997–2012), but this time—arguing that it is time to “transcend labels and partisan politics”—he is running a heroic campaign as an independent. Interestingly, 7 out of 10 registered voters in Ohio are unaffiliated with either of the two major political parties.
Kucinich launched his political career in the late 1960s as a 23-year-old member of the Cleveland City Council. When he was elected as mayor of Cleveland in 1977—becoming the youngest mayor of a major city in the U.S.—his pushback against a corrupt utility monopoly, its banking partners, and the mob earned him a media smear campaign and an assassination attempt. Undaunted, Kucinich ran for U.S. president in the Democratic primaries in 2004 and 2008 and for governor of Ohio in 2018, as well as making another run for Cleveland mayor in 2021.
While serving in Congress, Kucinich voted against the USA PATRIOT Act in 2001 and its renewal in 2006, and he has consistently opposed the U.S. “war machine.” In 1995, he recognized the threat to U.S. sovereign authority posed by the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and he now warns that a World Health Organization (WHO) global pandemic treaty would likewise jeopardize sovereignty.
In a recent interview, journalist Chris Hedges asked Kucinich about the Gaza genocide. Responding that the U.S. has given billions to Israel without “any conditions at all,” Kucinich asserted, “If you don’t have conditions, then you’re basically giving permission, and permission equals complicity.” He added that the U.S. has facilitated the dropping of the equivalent of 68 pounds of explosives per person in Gaza (150 million pounds total). Summing up his campaign’s position, he stated that “the United States must not permit this genocide to go on—and we [the U.S.] have paid for it.”
We do not always agree with Kucinich’s positions—for example, for most of his career, he supported gun control. However, he has now shifted his position and supports the 2nd Amendment. Kucinich is very knowledgeable about monetary policy and will be an important ally in stopping financial transaction control. Catherine has made a donation to the campaign and encourages others to spread the word, donate, and pray for him. As the Congressional career and important contributions of Representative Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) have made apparent, having a handful of people in Congress who understand the importance of the Constitution and sovereignty and how they relate to our financial system can make an enormous difference.
