Hurricane Helene has brought the true meaning of words like “neighborliness” and “community”—and especially the related qualities of generosity, selflessness, and kindness—to the forefront of the national consciousness.
In addition to neighbors helping neighbors, many others have stepped up to help with relief and recovery efforts, including unaffected residents of surrounding communities and states; people with private planes, helicopters, and off-road vehicles; military veterans; Army Reserve engineers; and other individuals and organizations moved by the plight of the devastated communities.
Victims of Hurricane Helene have commented, “Neighbors need to come together because there is no help coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA),” stating “We’re getting nothing from the government.” Others have asked, “Where is Joe Biden?”
Meanwhile, election officials in the devastated area are receiving a barrage of questions about how to vote under the challenging circumstances, along the lines of “I have requested an absentee ballot, but my mailbox went down the river,” “I have moved to a temporary shelter—where should I vote?” and “Where can my ballot be delivered to?”
We salute the individuals and mutual-aid groups who understand the importance and relevance of the “old-fashioned” American value of neighbor helping neighbor.
This coming week is a good time to reach out and talk to your neighbors – there is always opportunity when we care for each other.
