Book Review: Two Books on the Ills of Sitting

“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”
~ James Levine, professor of medicine

By Catherine Austin Fits

The more circumstances underscore the health risks in our environment, the more we think about what we can do to mitigate them. The easiest way to lower our risks of disease and early death is to stop doing the things that kill us—from driving after consuming too much wine at dinner to not getting enough sleep or exercise to eating too much sugar.

One item on my New Year’s resolutions list was to spend less time sitting. My desk is now motorized so it can serve both sitting and standing positions. I occasionally draft while lying on the QRS (Quantron Resonance System). Sometimes, I listen to videos and audios while working out or do conference calls while walking. Often, I just get up and prowl around my office for a minute or two. Still, it is not enough. I need to sit less.

In the hopes of getting more inspiration and some ideas for integrating more movement into my daily routine, I read two books on sitting:

Sitting Kills: Moving Heals by former NASA scientist Joan Vernikos, PHD is filled with interesting insights into our relationship with gravity, what NASA learned about keeping astronauts healthy in space, and what that means to you and me.

All This Sitting Is Killing You by Dr. Parley Anderson is larger and more colorful, with lots of photographs and graphics to document suggestions.

Both books make a compelling case that many of us spend way too much time in a sitting position. Both offer plenty of inspiration and tips to get up and get moving.

Whether in regard to GMO foods, chemical or biowarfare, or nuclear testing, I cannot change what Mr. Global is doing. Nevertheless, I have countless opportunities to improve my own habits today—opportunities that can make a big difference. As Abraham Lincoln said, “Discipline is choosing between what you want now, and what you want most.

Note to self: Sit less, move more!
