All That Glitters – September/October 2024

I got my first taste of alligator pear in North Africa, at the age of ten. It was cut into little blocks and mixed into our mealtime salad; we children were told it was a luxurious treat, very fattening, to be enjoyed in tiny amounts. My father mistakenly thought it contained cholesterol. He called it avocado; our grandmother, visiting from New York, called it avocado pear.
