Music of the Week: September 16, 2022: Enya – How Can I Keep From Singing

Enya is one of Ireland’s most famous figures. While often being associated with “New Age” or “Celtic” music, her songs touch people from all age groups and walks of life.

Enya started as part of the equally famous Irish family band Clannad but in her early 20s decided on a solo career. She sold millions of records worldwide, won four Grammy Awards for “Best New Age Album,” a World Music Award, as well as the German ECHO prize for her single “Only Time,” which became famous when it was used as a theme song by television networks in their coverage of the 9/11 attacks. Enya donated the earnings from “Only Time” to the Widows’ and Children’s Fund of the Uniformed Firefighters who were involved in first response and cleanup of Ground Zero.

Her music is not usually performed live, as the special sound that is Enya’s hallmark is created in the studio by a complex overlay of various voice tracks and harmonies in a process developed by her producer Nicky Ryan.

As Music of the Week, we have chosen Enya’s beautiful version of “How Can I Keep From Singing,” an American folk song and Christian hymn by Gospel writer Robert Lowry. We chose it for its uplifting and life-affirming lyrics. We should never stop singing!

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth´s lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
