Music of the Week: July 22, 2022: Joseph Haydn: Missa in angustiis

Haydn HobXXII 11 Lord Nelson Mass Nelson-Messe Missa in Angustiis Grete Pedersen

The “Mass for troubled times”—a magnificent master piece by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)— is our music of the week.

Writing this mass toward the end of his life, the trouble during Haydn’s time was the Napoleonic Wars after the French Revolution, which brought turmoil and havoc to many European regions.

The outstanding performance we hear and see in this recording is conducted by Norwegian conductor, music professor, and, yes, former national football (soccer) player Grete Pedersen. Under her guidance, the music receives a special dramatics and power that is simply captivating.

We hope you can make this a cultural and spiritual highlight of your weekend.
