For Let’s Go to the Movies, we have selected the 2015 blockbuster from the James Bond series, Spectre.
SPECTRE—acronym for “Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion”—is a transnational criminal organization that carries out terrorist acts around the globe and has infiltrated intelligence agencies to feed off their combined intelligence information. Its enigmatic leader and mastermind Ernst Blofeld plans to build an international surveillance network using satellites in space.
Even though not one of the best James Bond movies, the film highlights the importance of space and the fleets of satellites that are being employed for the “control grid” that is about to cover planet Earth. The movie helps to understand this invisible threat.
When Catherine uses the word “Spectre” as a moniker to refer to some of Mr. Global’s operations, it is from this context.
