Music of the Week: Feb. 11, 2022: G.F. Händel – Zadok the Priest – Organ Solo

HANDEL - ZADOK THE PRIEST (CORONATION ANTHEM) - PIPE ORGAN SOLO - JONATHAN SCOTT

HANDEL – ZADOK THE PRIEST (CORONATION ANTHEM) – PIPE ORGAN SOLO – JONATHAN SCOTT

Supporting the theme of “Sovereignty” in the 2021 Annual Wrap Up and this week’s report by John Titus, Georg Friedrich Händel’s coronation music comes to mind.

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet declare Solomon king of ancient Israel, and Solomon proceeds to build the temple, symbol of the presence of the Divine in human affairs. Ultimately, the king crowned in this anthem is not a worldly monarch but elevated humanity through Solomon and the Christ.

Originally composed for chorus and orchestra, Jonathan Scott here performs a unique solo arrangement for the pipe organ.

Brothers and international performers Jonathan and Tom Scott are highly skilled classical keyboard artists from the UK.
