We are starting our Christmas music season with a spectacular piece from Tommee Profitt’s Christmas album The Birth of a King.

“Mary, Did You Know?” is a Christmas song originally written by gospel singer and songwriter Buddy Greene (with lyrics by Mark Lowry) and has been covered and rendered so many times that it is hard to imagine any augmentation. Yet, Profitt’s version—featuring singer Jordan Smith—may have brought just that.

The song is a theological contemplation of the divine and human nature of Jesus Christ. Did Mary grasp the true implications of the birth of her firstborn? Have we, two thousand years since, understood any more of the presence of the Christ in human life?

Mary, did you know? …  That sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am.
