Let's Go to the Movies: Week of May 22, 2023: Spellers

May 20, 2023

This is a film (based on the book Underestimated by J.B. Handley and his son) that will forever change our view of individuals with autism, but also of other human beings and the way our minds learn.

“Mentally retarded” is the epithet most often given to persons on the autism spectrum who are nonspeakers, and yet it turns out that they are literally brilliant, intelligent, and extraordinary personalities once they can break through their muteness.

J.B. Handley, father of an autistic, nonspeaking child, discovered “Spelling to Communicate (S2C),” a method of letterboard dialogue, which has since freed his son Jamie and many more autistic persons AND their families from the terror and doom arising from the inability for verbal self-expression.

This is a “must-see” film that we want to promote. It is viewable for only a small fee until May 31st through streaming on the Spellers: The Movie website. Update: Online viewing has been extended through June 2023. Great opprtunity to watch.
