Providing great entertainment, a funny and intelligent plot, and a true story at its base (!), The Lost King is our movie recommendation for this week. The film tells the story of the finding of the remains of King Richard III under a parking lot in the city of Leicester when the intuitive hobby historian Philippa Langley is struck by an indelible insight into the exact location of Richard III’s shrine.
The discovery and exhumation of the remains happened in 2012, not without much struggle on the part of Langley to get permission and funding to excavate. In a very real portrayal (or should we say, betrayal) of the University of Leicester’s hijacking of fame for the discovery from Philippa, the film also dramatizes the vested interests and corporatism of big universities.
A great movie that entices us to study more about history and give thought to the many ways in which we are surrounded and influenced by the past.
The Lost King can be streamed or bought from various platforms. (Europeans, unfortunately, must wait until the fall of 2023 or stream from the U.S. using VPN.)
