Merchants who managed to open their doors were sometimes demanding that customers use cash only because of an inability to process credit or debit card transactions.”

Using cash is an action that anyone can take, anywhere in the world—and we cannot overemphasize its benefits or importance.

At the individual and household level, using cash has many advantages:

  • Cash makes you more aware of what you are spending.
  • When you see a purchase price in cash, you think twice about your purchases and are less likely to spend foolishly.
  • Limiting the amount of cash you carry on your person can help you set priorities.
  • Many businesses now provide discounts if you pay with cash (and at the same time, you are helping your favorite businesses save on burdensome transaction fees).
  • No one can track your purchases.

The power and Internet outages that accompanied Hurricanes Helene and Milton also recently highlighted why you always want to have some cash on hand.
