“[I]t’s one thing to think that gold has some marvelous store [of] value because man has no way of inventing more gold or getting it very easily…. Believe me, man is capable of somehow creating more Bitcoin. They tell you they’re not going to do it, but they mean they’re not gonna do it unless they want to…. If they tell you there are rules that they can’t do it, don’t believe them. When there’s enough incentive, bad things will happen.”
~ Charlie Munger, 2017
This year, we will continue to encourage practical actions for financial freedom. As we emphasized throughout 2024, this includes getting to know your state representatives and educating them about why financial freedom is so important.
While state legislators gear up for a new legislative session, they are being heavily lobbied to use the state government’s tax authority to adopt what amounts to a “reverse Robin Hood” scheme: so-called “Bitcoin strategic reserves.” The threat posed by this scheme—both to taxpayers and state governments—is, at this time, a pressing issue for legislators to understand.
To help educate your representatives, the following resources are at your disposal:
- Template letter to State Legislators Re: Proposed State-Level “Bitcoin Strategic Reserve”
- Bitcoin Bailout: Why a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve Is a Bailout of the Big Boys (available here and forthcoming as Solari Papers #4)
- What the States Can Do: Building the Legal and Financial Infrastructure for Financial Freedom
In advance of writing to or meeting with your representatives, we encourage you to read Hijacking Bitcoin: The Hidden History of BTC by Roger Ver with Steve Patterson and/or listen to Catherine’s interview with Patterson; also consider buying copies of Hijacking Bitcoin to give to your legislators.
